In the last 24 years Michael Whelan (b. 1950) has created hundreds of paintings commissioned for book covers, calendars, magazines, and record albums. He is a fifteen-time Hugo winner, and has won the World Fantasy Award award three times. More recently he was awarded a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators, an Award for Excellence in the Communication Arts Annual, and the Spectrum Gold Medal and the Lifetime Achievement award. He was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2009, the first living artist to be awarded that honor. Since 1998 he has been devoting his time primarily to his gallery work.
