Savage Bride

Cornell Woolrich

synopsis

“I only know there’s a line dividing strangeness from what isn’t strange. I only know you’re on one side of that line now, and I’m on the other.”
Mitty Fredericks is a woman being held captive by her foster father. A woman with no memory of her past and no worldly experience. Lawrence Kingsley Jones is just a regular guy stopping for directions on his way to the west coast. When the two of them meet, it’s love at first sight. Jones sees in her the chance to finally have a girl of his own, while Mitty sees in him someone who can rescue her from her life of captivity.
After a hasty marriage, the two of them find themselves on a ship bound for San Francisco where a new life awaits them, but fate has other plans in store. After a mishap strands them on the island of Puerto Santo, Jones learns there’s much more to his wife than meets the eye. First come the spells, strange episodes in which she wanders off in a catatonic state. Then there’s the unusual language she whispers in her sleep and the wild passion that seems to be simmering just below the surface.
The more he learns about Mitty, the less he seems to understand. Why is the girl’s foster father pursuing them so desperately and what is her connection to the mountain looming on the horizon? As the questions pile up, Jones finds himself stumbling into a waking nightmare.
Savage Bride represents one of Cornell Woolrich’s most underrated novels, a unique slow-burn cocktail of mystery, suspense, and horror written at the height of his powers. In these pages, Woolrich departs from his usual setting, swapping the mean streets of New York for the sweltering jungles of Central America.
Long sought by collectors, this neglected novel has remained out of print for over 60 years. This new edition marks the first time it has ever appeared in hardcover and features an introduction by author Jack Seabrook. Woolrich fans can finally rediscover this unfairly forgotten classic which takes its place next to the author’s other marriage-themed novels such as Waltz into Darkness, I Married a Dead Man, and Death Is My Dancing Partner.
In Woolrich’s hands, this sacred institution becomes an instrument of terror, where spouses become strangers, love turns to fear, and old secrets refuse to stay buried. Do you dare to answer the call of the Savage Bride?
